Според близки до Тотев, които познават стила му, между редовете прозира несъгласие с одобрената от Изпълнителната комисия на партията кандидатура за кмет на града.

„Идва време, в което човек трябва да предаде щафетата и затвори даден цикъл от живота си. След 15 години като областен координатор на ГЕРБ в Пловдив, след много понесени рани, спечелени битки и победи, мисля, че е време да предам ръководството на ГЕРБ в града.
